Great genre films from the German New Cinema, at Ceau, Cinema! Festival

Three great genre films made by iconic directors of the 60s – 80s German New Cinema – Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog and Rainer Werner Fassbinder – will be screened in Timișoara on the sixth edition of Ceau, Cinema! Festival, which will take place during July 18th – 21st.

The review, possible with the support of the German Cultural Centre from Timișoara and Goethe Institute from Bucharest, was conceived based on this year’s edition theme – the noir film genre – and it reveals the way in which important European cinema authors had brought new ground to the genre film conventions.

Included in the Competition of Cannes Festival, ”The American Friend” („Der amerikanische Freund”, 1977) is one of the most popular and appreciated films made by Wim Wenders. Casting, on top of the list, Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz, ”The American Friend” is an existential thriller about an American expat from Europe, who persuades a German manufacturer of painting frames, suffering from a possible fatal disease, to commit murder.

Winner of a Silver Bear at Berlin Festival, ”Nosferatu, the Vampire” („Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht”, 1979) is one of Werner Herzog’s cult-films, which makes 40 years from its premiere. A horror movie about Count Dracula, who moves to Transylvania in the German city of Wismar, spreading the black plague. Only a woman with a pure heart can end this kingdom of terror. The film casts Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani and Bruno Ganz.

By screening these two films, Ceau, Cinema! also brings homage to the legendary Swiss actor of German language Bruno Ganz, who has left us at the beginning of this year, at 77 years old.

The third title of the review is ”Veronika Voss” („Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss”, 1982), a film for which Rainer Werner Fassbinder had won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival, a few months before his passing, at the young age of 37. A former star actress of the famous UFA film studios, with a controversial past, rouses the suspicion of a sports journalist. With the events happening in 1955 and shot black and white, ”Veronika Voss” brings homage to the tradition of noir films.

The sixth edition of Ceau, Cinema! will take place during July 18th-21st, in Timişoara and Gottlob, the first village in Romania with a renovated cinema.

The festival passes, which give access to all the screenings in the festival, are already available online, on
