Three of the most important films by the great Polish director Andrzej Wajda will be screened in Timişoara from March 14th to 16th, in a retrospective organized by Ceau, Cinema! and the Polish Institute. The cinephiles from Timișoara will have the opportunity to discover or rewatch ”Man of Marble” (1977) and ”Man of Iron” (1981), both in restored versions, and ”Wałęsa: Man of Hope” (2013), all united in the so-called ”Solidarity Trilogy”.
The screenings are part of Ceau, Cineclub!, a monthly retrospective project proposed by Ceau, Cinema! outside of the festival. The schedule and tickets are available on the Cinema Studio website, the event’s host and partner.

The most renowned Polish director and one of the world’s most important filmmakers, Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016), is the author of an impressive body of work, with over 50 films that have documented the political and social evolution of his country and dealt with the myths of national identity, offering penetrating analyses of the universal element in the Polish experience—the struggle to maintain dignity in the most challenging circumstances.

In ”Man of Marble”, a young Polish female director sets out to find out what happened to a bricklayer who had become a propaganda hero in the 1950s, but later fell into disgrace and disappeared. This Polish cinema classic won the Critics’ Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and received a special award from the New York film critics.

In ”Man of Iron”, awarded with the Palme d’Or at Cannes and nominated at the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, the communist authorities in the Polish city of Gdańsk launch a smear campaign to discredit a prominent activist of the ”Solidarity” movement. They appoint a television journalist to infiltrate his inner circle.

”Wałęsa: Man of Hope” is a biographical film that depicts the extraordinary life of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa, over the course of a decade. An explosive film that dramatically follows the rise of the Polish ”Solidarity” movement, which was crucial to the collapse of the Soviet Union and Poland’s transition to democracy.
The films will be introduced by the artistic director of Ceau, Cinema!, the film critic Ionuţ Mareş.
The Andrzej Wajda Retrospective – The Solidarity Trilogy is organized by Ceau, Cinema! and the Polish Institute in Bucharest and is part of Ceau, Cineclub!
